Stockman in Abu Dhabi: Obama Does Not Currently Have the Votes for a Syrian Strike

Statement

Date: Sept. 4, 2013
Location: Abu Dhabi
Issues: Foreign Affairs

Congressman Steve Stockman released the following statement Wednesday after meeting with Mohammed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces:

As it stands currently, President Obama does not have the votes to approve military action against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Those for and against military action, including Russian President Putin, will be stepping up their efforts this week to reach out to members of Congress.

My colleagues on the House Foreign Affairs Committee are convening a hearing at this moment to hear testimony from Secretary of State Kerry, Defense Secretary Hagel and Joint Chiefs Chairman General Dempsey. I hope the Committee's questions will be respectfully and fully answered.

Grassroots pressure forced Obama to obey constitutional limits on his power and seek the approval of Congress before engaging in military action. I encourage all Americans to study this issue and speak out to their elected representatives.
